Working at Third Space Bakery Co-op

We create wonderful, proudly handcrafted bread & pastries for Pittsburgh, and offer culinary events and classes. We are a small operation - each one of our employees are valuable to daily operations, and furthering long-term cooperative goals.


We are a worker-owned cooperative, which means that our founding (and stewarding) worker-owners define the bakery’s values and goals, and collaborate with all bakery staff to attain them. Worker-ownership is potentially offered to all Third Space employees, after they have committed the required time with the bakery and have met eligibility requirements. With a financial investment into the bakery, these employees have a voice in running the cooperative and are entitled to an annual share in our profits. 


We encourage job applicants who are potentially interested in becoming a worker-owner to let us know in your application. Please note that interest in becoming a worker-owner is by no means a requirement of applying and/or working with us. Employees can work for Third Space without opting to become a worker-owner.

Production Baker

We are seeking a part-time baker to work with our head bakers in the production of pastries and sourdough breads at our storefront location.


Qualifications:

  • Food Handlers ServSafe Certification
  • Passion for food, cooking, and/or baking
  • 2 years minimum commercial kitchen or bakery experience
  • Willingness to wake up early, stand and be very active for 8 hour days (with breaks, of course)
  • Willingness to learn! There is much room for growth and creativity in this position.



 Job Description:

  • Works with head baker(s) to complete an array of bakery tasks, including but not limited to:
    • Scaling and mixing batches of sourdough
    • Working through pastry recipes to prep doughs and batters
    • Baking off product for the storefront
  • Keeps workspace clean and organized, able to multitask, and has great attention to detail
  • Able to lift 50 lbs (we get big bags of flour!)
  • Helps with cleaning dishes - bakery staff shares this responsibility
  • Attends to customers to support FOH staff as needed

 

Hours:

  • 2-3 eight hour days to start (16-24 hours), with the potential for 3-4 days a week after training 
  • Exact hours TBD. Expect 6am-2pm, 7am - 3pm, or // 11am-7pm shifts.


Compensation:

  • $15-17 hour, based on experience
  • Shared tips
  • One free loaf per 6-hour shift
  • 20% employee discount

Market Staff

We are seeking part-time market stand staff for the Third Space Bakery stand at the Squirrel Hill Market’s summer season.


Qualifications:

  • Food Handlers ServSafe Certification (a brief online course - we can help you get this!)
  • Interest in sustainable baking (knowledge of local grains is a big plus), and a working knowledge of our mission and products
  • Appreciation for quality baked goods and sourdough breads
  • Able to lift 30 lbs and stand for 4 hours in all weather (you’ll have a tent cover, of course)
  • Reliable use of a vehicle to transport market equipment and products to and from the market

Job Description:

  • Arrives on time to help set up, run, and break down the market stand
  • Is friendly and welcoming to stand visitors
  • Assists customers by bagging their orders and answering questions about products
  • Handles the cash register and Square card processing unit
  • Keeps stand clean and organized, with great attention to detail

 Hours:

  • Sundays, 7am - 2pm, from May 10th - December 20th
  • MARKETS ARE RAIN OR SHINE


Compensation:

  • $15/hour
  • Shared tips
  • One free loaf per market
  • 20% employee discount
